Link won't stay put on desktop!

Recently started using Nokia PC Suite.

There is a peculiarity about its desktop link, in that every time it is
clicked it moves itself to a new position on the screen, upsetting my
preferred layout. This happens even if I delete the link and make a new one!

Is there any way to make it stay put? (I don't use 'lock web items on
desktop' because I hate the boxes this puts around the icon descriptions.).

Cheers,
S

Uncheck "Auto Arrange"
"Align to Grid"

Thank you Gary,

I do have autoarrange unticked. It is just this Nokia shortcut which
refuses to stay put. On our pc, each time it is clicked it repositions
itself on the top left of the desktop. Interestingly, I have just loaded it
on to a laptop, which as far as I can tell has the same desktop settings,
and here, at the moment at least, it is staying put on the right, where I
want it. (Possibly it moves once it has been synchronised with the phone -
which I don't want to do on the laptop at the moment.)

How can a shortcut ignore the desktop settings?

Cheers for responding.

You could try using a layout dll. available in :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 188/Right Column
It adds a function in the context menu when you right click My Computer or
Recycle Bin,where you can "Save Desktop Icon Layout & "Restore Desktop Icon
Layout & see if that'll make it stick.
You merely download it to where ever you want & move the layout dll. to
C:Windows/System 32 & then double click the vbs. which adds it to the
registry & a prompt will let you know that it was successful. Then you
should see the addition to the My Computer & Recycle Bin right click
function.
If you have "Align to Grid" AND "Auto Arrange" both unchecked, then I can't
see why it still decides to move.
She also has a tweak(but I haven't tried this one myself) that you can "Save
Setting on Exit" Line 54/Right column,if that doesn't help.

Good to hear from you Kelly (I've been using your 'task bar activate' for
some time by the way.)

I don't quite see how either of these suggestions is going to work:

The icon maintains my preferred position on opening and closing XP: it is
only when the icon is clicked that it moves. It seems to be that a function
of opening the Nokia 'suite' is to simultaneously move the shortcut icon to
the left side of the desktop. But I do not understand why this happens on
the pc and not the laptop.

Very odd,

Cheers for the suggestions anyway.

Note also that a symbol for the Nokia suite also appears in the notification
area no matter how many times I cancel it. And when I 'remove' this from
the system start up with the tool provided in SpyBot, it simply reinstalls
itself. (Similarly, I have used this tool to 'remove' something called
'ctfmon' which it says is unnecessary and a possible virus target, but this
too just reinstalls itself into the start up set, so one gets a whole stack
of 'disabled' lines... )

(That prompted me to check up on ctfmon and I've now read the knowledge base
piece, so don't worry about that - cheers)

Further findings:

A solution - sort of:

Deleted the Nokia generated desk top shortcuts, and the startup entry from
both the start menu and with Spybot.
Rather irritatingly found that trying to delete things from the start menu
'sprawl across the screen' listings actually calls up the permanent hour
glass, and can only be gotten out of by logging off with process explorer...

After two such log offs, used the 'send to' option from the programmes
section of the sprawl across, to put a windows generated shortcut on the
desktop.

This seems to keep it in the right place.
There is still the minor irritation of the Nokia symbol staying in the
notification area after the suite has been used and ostensibly closed, but
we can live with that.

Kelly: if you are still monitoring this: would your TaskBarPlus gadget
enable one to stop the start menu delete process hang without me having to
log off?

Cheers,

Hi Kelly,

Did you read the last thread (sent as Spamlet - depends whether I'm on pc or
laptop...), I sussed how to defeat Nokia's little irritation, but in
solving it, uncovered another problem that one of your gadgets might help to
fix.

Cheers,

S
