Link to 'User's Documents' in 'My Computer' deleted.

After rebooting the computer from an unsafe shutdown and logging into
my account on Windows XP - a small, unfamiliar message box loaded on
the top-left hand corner reading lines similar to "Applying personal
settings" and "Loading user profile". Once loaded, the background of my
account was reset to default and most of the icons previously on the
desktop were not present.

I logged off and reset the computer, logging back in after startup to
find everything back to normal - except that the link to 'User's
Documents', or in this case, 'Bhaskar's Documents' in My Computer was
no where to be seen. 'My Documents' and all the contents inside were
still present in the startup menu as well as in the C drive, yet the
link in My Computer to 'User's Documents' was deleted. I had not
deleted, modified or moved any folders from the C:\Documents and
Settings directory, and performed no significant tasks earlier except
removing a program with Add/Remove Programs in the control panel.

If there is a way to restore this folder / link in My Computer, then I
would greatly appreciate any assistance - also if there is any
information as to how such a folder / link is removed in the first
place, that would be of help as well.

Check and see if you have a new profile under C:\Documents and Settings
folder similar to the old but now with your computername, e.g.,
USERNAME.YOURCOMPUTERNAME.

Thank you for that link Ayush, can you tell me where I should put that
..reg file in regedit?

1.Put that URL in IE [OR] in Start > Run dialog
2.Click Save at the prompt.
3. Run the file by right click > Merge. Click Yes at the prompt.

Ok, I've saved the .reg file and merged it into the registry -
unfortunately there is no change, My Computer is still missing the
folder in question. I've reset the computer and it is still the same.
(Note that I did not save the .reg file in the registry, but opened and
merged the file into the registry once prompted.)

NewScience, there are no new profiles in C:/Documents and Settings that
have appeared recently, and none are named such as 'USERNAME.COMPUTERS
NAME' either.

Just to double check, you are not looking for something that states exactly
USERNAME.COMPUTERSNAME but something thast has that format, e.g.,
John.Home Computer, correct? Sometimes people actually look for the exact
example name.

Have you tried to re-register c:\windows\system32\mydocs.dll?

Close all Windows Explorer windows, Copy/paste regsvr32
c:\windows\system32\mydocs.dll into a STart | Run window and click OK.

Reboot and see if that fixes your problem.

Just copy/pasted regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mydocs.dll into the Run
window, a message box appeared as soon as I clicked ok on the run
window and it said something along the lines of ".dll file succeeded.".
After that I rebooted, yet there was no change.

Also, I acknowledged that 'username.computersname' was the format of
the possible profile folder and not named exactly that, again - no such
folder exists in C:/Documents and Settings.

1. Create a new user account and if the problem is not in that User account then copy
your settings from old account.
[OR]
2. Is Shared documents listed ??
[OR]
3. Click Start > Run > Copy/Paste the lines one/by/one (a OK after each copy/paste) :
reg export "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer" "C:\LM_EXplorer.txt"
reg export "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies" "C:\LM_Polc.txt"
reg export "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer" "C:\CU_Explorer.txt"
reg export "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" "C:\CU_Polc.txt"

Attach four files : LM_Explorer.txt, LM_Polc.txt, CU_Explorer.txt, CU_Polc.txt (ALL
in C:\)
Maybe attach will not work because they are big in size so zip/upload them

Ok, all four of the text files are now on the C drive - yet exactly
where did you want me to upload them?
