Link Sys wireless

M

My nephew, who lives one state over, bought a link sys wireless router
today (to use with his xbox) I thought that without using the
wireless part he could just plug the modem into the router and then
plug the computer into the router and the desktop should work.

It doesn't. I had him run the set up disk. Setup senses the online
connection. It then gives two options: Replace the existing router
or use this router along with the existing router.

I told him to pick replace modem. Setup then instructs him to unplug
the existing router and install the link sys one. At this point setup
just hangs. It is like it is searching for the Internet and can't
find it.

Any suggestions where we are going wrong?

That depends. If the modem is a CABLE modem which doesn't require a user
name/password, then yes, it should work. If it's any other type of modem,
then no, that should not work. Not without further work to set up the
router, that is.

OK, where is the other router you are talking about? You previously
mentioned a modem, and the linksys router. If the modem is ALSO a router,
then you might be out of luck, as far as using the linksys router goes.

OK, what router are you talking about? Did he replace the MODEM with the
linksys router? If so, then of course the setup is going to hang, and not
find the Internet. If you are writing about a modem PLUS two physical
routers (including the new linksys one) then you have some research to do.
You need to determine what specific type of modem you are working with, and
if it requires a user name / password. If so, that's not a problem, but you
probably won't be able to get the linksys router working with any kind of
setup utility from linksys...you will need to log into the linksys router to
set it up manually. Somewhere in there, you will need to specify what your
internet connection is (cable modem, DSL, pppoe, whatever) and then put in
your user name / password, if necessary. I doubt if any setup utility from
linksys or anyone else would handle this gracefully, so you'll have to do it
manually, using a web browser. -Dave

They have a new ADSL connection to the Internet. I modem and no
router.

We are trying to add a new link sys wireless router. The thing is
that the setup only gives two options and both are wrong. The choices
are to replace the existing router or to add the router to the
existing router.

OK, you need to totally ignore the setup utility. You are going to have to
program the linksys router manually, and it WILL work. In fact, it will
work awesome.

First, you need your exact user name and password for your ADSL account. If
you don't know it, you will have to call your DSL provider, and ask.

With that information:

1) Hook up your Linksys router between the DSL modem and a computer (any
computer, not an xbox) using ethernet cables. If your DSL modem doesn't
have an ethernet connection, you will need to get a different DSL modem.
2) Do NOT run a setup program from linksys
3) Fire up your web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) on the computer
connected to the linksys router
4) In the address bar of your web browser, type the IP of your router,
which is probably 192.168.1.1
If that doesn't work, refer to the literature that came with the router to
find what IP it is using
5) Your router should ask for a user name (login) and password
first box is blank (empty)
password is admin
If those don't work, call linksys to find out what the default login and
password is for your particular router
6)Now you should be in the setup menus for the linksys router.
7) In setup somewhere, you will need to specify connection type or WAN
type. Choose "PPPOE"
8) After selecting PPPOE, you will need to enter the user name and password
for your DSL account.
9) While you are in the setup, you might want to enable the wireless
function, and change the SSID from linksys to something more memorable like
"bob" for example :)
10) Before closing your web browser, save the settings by hitting apply or
save changes or whatever.

Done! -Dave
