line of dots that won't go away. Came from 3 asterisks & a return. Can't delete!

Hi. I'm completely frazzled. You know how when you type three * in a row and hit return, it turns into a continuous line of dots that go all the way across a page. Quite useful for separating bits of information

The problem is, I can't get these dots to go away. If I try to delete them by getting in front of them and hitting delete, they just stay there. If I come up from the end and try to "back up" over them (which would erase anything else), they more often than not do not go away. Instead, the text below just moves up above them

I've tried to cut and paste the text onto another page (or another document), but they just travel right along and put themselves down in the new spot.

I'm frantic - I'm on deadline with a bunch of letters that have to get out, and I can't get those *#@%ing dots out of my document

HELLLLP! - I know this happened once before to me - probably 5 or more years ago, so it's something that's been in Word for some time.

Also, they don't show up if I do reveal formatting

These were created in a Word for Windows program; I tried bringing it into Mac, but it's the same there

Ola,
The "line of dots" is a border. Select (or place the insertion point in)
the paragraph *above* the line of dots, click Borders and Shading on the
Format menu, click the Borders tab, in the Setting box click None and then
click OK. The "line of dots" will disappear.

Their creation is enabled by checking the Borders check box in the
AutoFormat As You Type tab of the AutoCorrect dialog box (Tools>AutoCorrect
in Word 2000).
