Likely Bug. Vista Backup failure

Vista Full backup (safesystem, not safedocs) fails with error:

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
It displays error code 0x8007045d
(Which should map to: ERROR_IO_DEVICE)

Application event log indicates:
----
Event ID: 517
source: Backup
Backup started at '3/17/2007 4:33:10 PM' failed with following error code
'2147943517' (The request could not be performed because of an I/O device
error.). Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.
----

Note: '2147943517' is same as 0x8007045d, ERROR_IO_DEVICE

The Backup log indicates:
-----
Event ID: 5
Backup started at '3/17/2007 4:33:10 PM' failed with following error code
'11'.
-----

System Config:
Vista Ultimate
C: is a single partition raid 0 array.
D: is a single partition sata data drive.
G: is an external USB drive where the backups are placed.

Event logs do not indicate any drive failure. No event ID 7,9,11,26,
50,51,55 or other errors indicating any drive trouble.

An Offline chkdsk passes with no errors on all three drives.

I'm on my third External USB drive. Same problems on all of them.
Swapped mobo so all new USB controller and drive controllers.

The size of the .vhd file is close enough to the size of the data on the C:
drive (not counting pagefile and whatnot) that it appears the backup may
actually be successful. The size doesn't change when I also backup D: so it
appears the failure is happening as the backup is being finalized on C:.

I'm seeing tons of people having this all over the 'net but no real answers
(format doesn't count!).

Any ideas?
Anyone know what error code '11' aligns to?

I can't remember the place I saw it, but I found a post that solved this
problem for me anyway.

Apparently the problem has to do with the "volume shadow copy" feature, and
is a known bug that is being looked into by MS. The workaround at this point
is to turn off system restore on all your drives, then turn it back on. This
"flushes" something in the volume shadow copy that then allows backup to work.

Here are the instructions:

Right click on "computer", select properties, then select "advanced". From
that dialog, click on "system protection". Note which drives have check marks
next to them, then clear all the check marks and click on Apply. Once this is
done, the volume shadow copy data should be "flushed". You can then click on
the check boxes for the drives again to turn system restore back on, and
click Apply a second time. You should probably also click on "create" at this
point to build an initial system restore point.

Well, I can't edit my original reply, or I would. This will have to suffice.

I just found the original post I was talking about, and it turns out it was
You (or someone else named "smilin"?) that had the solution I was talking
about. Thanks for solving my problem for me!

I have been in contact with the manufacturer of my computer (HP Pavilion
a6030n) for 3 weeks regarding the inability to do a full back up without the
error code: I/O Device Error 0X8007045D. After innumerable hours of
troubleshooting, even the store I purchased my computer from was unable to
fix it and gave me a new computer. To my horror, I got it home and tried to
run a full system back up and got the same error! Your post has saved me! By
turning off the system restore on all my drives and then turning it back on,
I was able to complete the full back up! I sure hope Microsoft gets it
remedied so that everyone doesn't have to go through what I did in searching
for the answer. Thank you very much.

I followed the instructions and while it no longer is doing a shadow copy, I
still get the same error message and the back-up fails. Any further
suggestions? Thanks.

Well, after 3 tries, the described "fix" did work.
