Vista Backup Failure 0x80070057

When I click on the Backup icon, I no longer get the backup wizard but
instead get the message

"The backup application could not start due to an internal error. The
parameter is incorrect (0x80070057). Please check your system configuration
and try again".

This is with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. It used to work until my USB backup
drive filled up, and after I changed to a larger USB backup drive. Switching
back to my original USB backup drive now produces the same message.

Where or how can I find out how to correct this problem?

I have this one too. On my Hp Pavilion notebook. Unfortunately the only way
I was able to resovle the issue was to do a complete reformat of my hard
drive.

Sorry,

I agree, this is probably the best way to go.

Errors like that could take days to work out. You need to remember that
eventhough Vista is a good operating system you need to accept the fact that
it is very bloated. Problems like this one are very complicated. Why waste
your time, just reformat and reinstall. And if that don't work try something
else to do the job.

I do all my backups with xxcopy. Hey, it's simple and it works! Check it out
at http://www.xxcopy.com/index.htm

File Backup fails with the following error:
The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)

This error is caused by a bug in File Backup where if you don't back up at least one file
during the full backup, every backup after that fails. The workaround is to go through the
Backup wizard again and choose a new full file backup at the very end.

Hello Michael.

When I invoke the backup wizard, I get a screen stating that Automatic file
backup is not set up. The button for Change Backup Settings" is grayed out.
The only button that is not grayed out is the one for "Set up automatic file
backup" but when I click on this button, I immediately get the same failure
message. So changing my USB backup drives must have really screwed things
up.

I briefly tried the XXCOPY program suggested in another post, but it didn't
work properly even with the User Account Control disabled. So I uninstalled
it.

My laptop (A Lenovo T61) does have a system backup and recovery feature
which allows individual file recovery, and I just confirmed that it still
works. But it resides on the same hard drive (in a hidden directory) and
defeats the purpose of having an independent backup drive. So unless anyone
else has a suggestion (short of reformattng and starting over), I am reduced
to manually backing up only my Documents directory.

Hopefully, this feature will be reinstated when the first SP1 becomes
available, but I am not optimistic.

Buy Acronis, seriously. I MS can't get simply thing like Explorer,
networking, and security to work well, how the hell would you expect
something like backup to work? If your data is of any value to you DO
NOT fool around with MS backup.
