Licensing Issue

I looked for a licensing newsgroup and could not find one, so since my
question is with W2K Server here goes.

We have a W2K server that used to be a DC, but was demoted when we put in a
new SBS 2K3 unit. The W2K domain had 35 user CALs.

Now that this is only a member server, what are the CAL requirements for it.
It services one SQL application and users home directory folders. Is a CAL
for each user accessing this system still required, or are the SBS CALs
sufficient.

Secondly, does something need to be reset on the W2K member server now that
it is no longer a DC (concerning the licensing). I continually get messages
saying that the license usage is nearing its maximum, however I.m not sure
that is true since the SBS box has 30 CALs and the max used todate is 20.

If I look at the licensing tool on the W2K member server, it has some weird
numbers in it. Under Product View tab it says that Microsoft Exchange Server
2K3 has 750 Per Server CALs purchased and 0 reached. Windows Server has 35
jpurchased and 20 reached. BackOffice 0 purchased, ...

What is that 750 number. Something because of an incompatability w/ SBS
2K3. It is the only place that EX Srvr 2K3 would be.

I'm just confused, and I want to get rid of those annoying messages about
the CALs running low.

Thanks for any help or light you can shed.

If this is a member server in your SBS 2003 domain, your SBS CALs cover it.

I'd stop and disable the license logging service - that's an unreliable (and
non-mandatory) thing anyway.

Lanwench,

Thanks for replying so soon. I will disable the logging tomorrow and be
done with the issue.

You're most welcome. Note that the license logging service is buggy and most
people I know stop & disable it & keep track of their licenses manually.

One other quick question: Is that true on W2K3 & SBS2K3 also or just on W2K?
I had heard it on W2K, just forgot about it.

I never tried doing anything with it on SBS, at all - I'd leave it be. But
W2k and W2k3 server - yeah, stop/disable/keep an Excel spreadsheet.
