Have you tried loading the printer (drivers) first, then connecting the
print device?

There is a XP driver for your printer on the Lexmark web site with a June 2004
timestamp.
http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:0:0:0

It is always wise to completely uninstall the driver before installing a new driver
or re-installing the old. Go here, there is a special section for Lexmark
How to clean up printer drivers

There are vendors that have replacement parts for HP printers. You might want to try
a search.
