letter opens instead of blank sheet

Every time I open a blank Word sheet, a previous letter
opens. I have tried deleting and it is not listed in "my
documents" for me to delete there. On the "windows"
button of the tool bar, the letter is identified
as "document 1" and if I click on "new window" it just
repeats the same letter calling it "document 2". I have
downloaded the latest Microsoft upgrades for Office but
to no avail. Any idea on how to get rid of this
repeating letter?
