How to I get rid of an old letter.

When I started using MS Office 2007 I wrote a letter of reference for an
employee. Every time I open a new word document I get the old letter. I opens
as Document 1 with all the text from this letter I wrote months ago. I am
stymied. How do I get rid of it????!!!!!
