Layperson Has Multiple Issues

Greetings,

A few months ago, I was gifted a computer which was part of a corporate
network but used from a remote location. I have a Dell OptiPlex GX200
running Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 with the following factory
installed software: MS Office XP Professional, Norton Antivirus Turbo
(Corporate Edition), and Win2k Service Pack 1.

I do not have any CDs associated with this unit as my benefactors cannot
locate them. Hence, I have limitations i.e. I cannot run the Dell
Diagnostics feature since I do not have the required CD. I am hoping to get
a replacement through Dell.

I have DSL through my telephone provider which came with McAfee Antivirus
and McAfee Firewall. I have also downloaded the free versions of Spybot,
Lavasoft Adaware, and Google toolbar for its pop-up blocker. I run all
protection software daily.

I am current with Windows/Microsoft Updates.

I wish to obtain help with several problems I have been experiencing:

1. Prior to installing McAfee, I removed all programs with Norton and
Symantec in its name. Yet, Norton reappeared a short time later and I cannot
uninstall it via the control panel. The first step indicates it is searching
for the components. When the uninstall commences, the sequence counts down
the time remaining to complete the uninstall. The uninstall freezes at 38
seconds remaining and never completes. Any suggestions?

2. A few days ago, I began to watch video clips on the MSN Video Webpage.
My computer meets the system requirements and I followed the recommended
settings for the pop-up blocker and firewall. Upon viewing two or three
clips, something causes the computer stop (crash). I have it set for a small
memory dump and an automatic restart. One of two error messages precedes the
shutdown: Internet Exployer has experienced an "internal problem" and needs
to close or Internet Exployer has experienced a "problem" and needs to close.
I send an error report. Deleting cookies, teporary internet files, and
history often has not helped, so I do not believe the cache(s) is/are full.
I am seeking a remedy to the shutdown/crashing. I would also like to know
what affect the shutdown/crash has on the computers system. Finally, what is
being dumped? Thank you.

3. MSN Video also offers two media content download packages: by
subscription and a more restrctive free version. When trying to sigh up for
the freebie, I was prompted to update the Microsoft Media Player to version
10. It appears the current version for Windows 2000 is 9.0. Is there way to
get version 10 for Windows 2000?

4. I cannot change the settings under Automatic updates as they are shaded
grey. And, the current setting is not working. I have to go to the update
website and manually get the updates. How do I make the Automatic Updates
feature operable?

Pardon the length of this post - I wanted to be thorough.

Thank you for your assistance with the aforementioned. I look forward to
your reply.

Cheers,

Sorry - after all that, I failed to mention:

The Operating System is Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 with NT
Technology.

Thanks.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for taking the time to help. I will certainly move forward with
your suggestions.

I login under the local administrator and still cannot change the Automatic
Updates. I posted in the Automatic Updates Newsgroup a while back. A
possible sloution invovles a tweak and the Registry Keys...heady stuff for
me. But, I am here to learn how to best maintain this system, so I will roll
up my sleeves.

Since my post, I had a few different error messages. Seems the virtual
memory is low - which I am thinking is what has caused the shutdown/crash and
poor (slow) performance these last three days.

Again, thank you. I ruly appreciate your assistance. Have a fabulous
weekend.
