Launching programs in task bar

I have a number of applications in my task bar that no longer launch on a
single click. After trying a number of things including reloading software,
rebooting (warm and cold), and various utilities to clean up drive, the only
solution I came up with was to "open as" and then select Administrator with
password. This is the same information as I use when I log onto the machine
so I am unclear why I need to re-enter it but it works. The problem is I have
to do it everytime I want to run these programs. None of the above actions
have helped.

Are there any suggestions??? I'm comfortable editing the registry if that is
necessary.

Thanks in advance ...

I have not repaired the Windows XP installation. Can I do that without
reinstalling and losing all my settings?

A repair install is different than a clean install in that your uder created
files won't be affected. Your programs and settings may have to be
reinstalled/reset. This is because the registry is deleted and reinstalled
in the repair install.

Is there a better alternative? Can I make an edit in the registry? I have a
lot of programs loaded and the time required to reinstall makes this solution
less than attractive.

No. I wasn't suggest that you do. I was looking to see if this might have
been the cause!!!

When did this start happening? has anything been changed?

Try System Restore!!
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

Have you tried System Restore? If you are unable to run it, you can make a
backup of your registry and then import it when you have completed the
repair install. Type regedit in the run box. Then, make sure My Computer is
highlighted in the root regisrty tree and go File > Export. Name your file
and then clcik save. The downside is that any problems with the registry are
also exported. It is also important to consider that a less than attractive
solution, as you call it, may be the best alternative. I doubt you want to
lose all your files through a complete reformat/reinstallation. Still, try
System Restore first, and take your system back to the day before you had
your issue.

Okay ... The restore does not go back far enough so I cannot get back to
where the system was operating correctly (also wouldn't know how far to go
back even if I had the options). The utilitiy suggested by KB did not work.
Help was very limited so I could not determine if I downloaded the correct
file.

Note: Some of my programs work fine and a select few do not. In fact, the
shortcut in the Programs menu also does not work until I set properties to
allow other users. When I do, Administratoy shows up and I enter my login
password. Once I do, the file is loaded. The inconvenience is that I have to
do the extra steps everytime I start the program.

Does anyone know how I can edit the registry for the select few programs
that are not working properly????

Thanks again, in advance ...

Don't know what KB you are referring to?

He was one of the respondents. I suspect hawking his own or a friend's
software. Anyway, do you have any other suggestions for me? I have been
unable to find a Microsoft KB article on the subject.
