Thanks. I appreciate your taking the time to answer. The
solution you propose has the drawback of making it
difficult to "restore" a window to a smaller size - since
the restored size becomes the same as the maximized size.
Of course, you can always shrink it, but that is a
nuisance. I think I remember seeing a setting which allows
you to specify that you want new windows launched
maximized, but can't find it now.

In that case you may prefer using Fullscreen mode instead.
Press F11 to toggle it on. Then instead of having to find the
Restore button with the mouse just press F11 again to switch
a window back to normal mode with your preferred size and shape.
