Becareful of this latest security update.

so far I have two machines that have installed the critical update and it
has caused Blue Screens of Death with a KERNAL_MODE_TRAP error.

To fix this issue I have had to re-install the OS.

Way to test your Critical Updates. This is a NIGHTMARE!

Nice way to reward the people who make of point of installing the updates
with more nightmare and problems, This latest critical update problem will
force my hand to start looking at linux for our desktop because of all the
Security Iussues and problems with the Security process at Microsoft.

As a practice, I do not allow any updates until I review them thoroughly.
after reviewing them, I test them on an test machine and run everything we
normally run on our domain. don't let someone else - any ne else run your
network. If you allow automatic updates that is exactly what you are doing.

Chris,

It is the update that was released yesterday.

Some machines it goes in without an issue, other not so good.

It is definitely on the of critical updates, I am doing testing right now to
figure out the excat update. I had to re-install Windows 2000 Pro on one of
the machines this morning, when I was putting the final Critical Updates back
in after the re-install, the same exact thing happened again ... Kernel Trap
Mode - Blue screen.

I will post more soon as I figure out exactly which update is the one
causing the Blue Screen.

I'm having the same problem on a windows 2000 sp4 dell precision 340.
Has anyone came up with a solution other than running a repair on the
whole OS?
Thanks

Dustin,

The only way I have found to fix the three machines that experienced it so
far is to run Windows 2000 Pro Install from the Windows 2000 Pro CD-ROM, once
install starts it sees the old installations and I choose to repair it.

This is not the repair console, but actually re-installs the OS but leaves
all the software and data in place. Then I had to go back and re-apply SP4
and SP1 for IE 6.

Soon I will have one of the machines that crashed available for testing and
I will figure out the exact Update number that is causing the problem.

FYI -

This problem is resolved by booting into safe mode, uninstalling the Intel
Ultra Storage Driver, rebooting into normal mode, installing the Intel
Chipset Software Installation Utility (if not already installed), rebooting
once more, installing the Intel Application Accelerator, and rebooting once
more. This has been verified on several systems on our campus and has worked
on every one we have tried it on so far.
