laserjet to work with Vista

I plan to buy a new printer HP Laserjet 1020. Somobody suggested to check if
there is a driver that will work with Vista. I went to the HP website, but
it apperas that they did not update their site. It says that the drivers
would be ready in January 2007. Does Vista have a generic driver that will
allow me to print? Is there any laser printer that is "certified" to work
with Vista?

seems the generic drivers do just fine. It's the software the HP bundles
that is still in development. I have the Laserjet 1320.

I installed the HP LaserJet 1020 onto Vista business with no problems...
but... when I added the laser to my SBS 2003 server, and tried to connect it
that way, I got a spooler error all the time. I had to do an installation,
wait for the thing to fail, start the spooler services and redo the
installation. Worked fine.

Hi Daniel,
Does your 1320 print on both sides?
I have the 1320 PCL 6 and didn't know if the driver would do this.

Mark,

I checked H/P's site before I upgraded to new machines with Vista premium on
them. The site said they were supported. After I get them home I discover
that only the printer portion of my H/P 3380 Multi functions work.
:-(
From my understanding the newer the machine and the ones with lots of
features such as mine are less likely to work. I have been searching for a
work around for almost a week to no avail.
I went on the H/P website and the 1020 appears to have the same "limited
functionality" that mine does. I didn't read about your whole machine so I
don't know all of your advanced features but i suspect they don't work. I
would hold off buying it unless you just want a plain vanilla printer or you
don't mind waiting possibly till mid summer for some to be released.

Good luck,
Lloyd in H/P driver Hell

There are a few classes of devices for which full featured support is
on various companies 'to do' list.

High up on that are the 'all-in-one' devices. Print functionality
seems to be support out of the box, but fax and scan -- ooops..

Similar issues seem to apply to other fax and scan devices -- and
scanners as well -- though some of these are supported.

Then there are video cards not fully supported -- some of the newest
ones along with previous generation ones. On the ATI side, the lack of
support for any AGP Radeon below the 9550 series seems most painful.
For nVidia -- looks like they are still a bit behind the curve with
full function drivers -- even for the hyper expensive 8800.

What might be nice would be a list of 'not there' and 'never will be
there' devices so folks could either avoid them, or (if they do advance
planning instead of buy then try) determine whether the cost of
hardware changes when added to the cost of the OS makes sense.

I had to buy HP 1020 (the cheapest laser) because the my HP LaserJet 1012
would not work at all with Vista and I had to print a spreadsheet from Excel
2007.
HP 1020 failed to install on Vista. At least that was what the error message
indicated, but Vista does show 1020 printer icon in the Printers folder.
It did print spreadsheet that I copied from Excel 2003 to Excel 2007.
In Word 2007 it fails to print after I click Print and shows no printer jobs
in the Printer folder. It does print after I go back to the document, and
click Print again. I tested simple text document in Word 2007.
BTW: that printer is currently $99.00 (this week special).

Did you try using the driver for HP PCL5 printers under Vista? I use a 1012
myself and It's been printing just fine under Vista using that driver.
