laserjet 4200 drum kit issue

I have an HP lj4200. It has stopped working because some chip on the drum
kit has decided that this component's life has expired. It was printing fine
until the moment it locked up, so what this really means is 'you are not
giving enough money to Hewlett Packard'.

Does anyone know of a method to disable the chip and allow the printer to
continue working?

The chip on these cartridges is usually very accurate, so there is probably
almost no toner left.
I know of no way to disable the chip but it should not be necessary.

Tony,

There is plenty of toner in the cartridge. I know this perfectly well
because I've only just refilled it myself for the n th time using toner from
http://www.refill-toner.co.uk/howto.htm .

The problem is an outrageous crippling by the chip that HP put on cartridges
to make one go and buy their over priced crap. Changing the cartridge fixed
the problem, and I am hopeful of getting a modified chip that will make the
cartridge work until it is genuinely worn out.

There should be a law against this sort of thing!

I was not aware that you had refilled the cartridge, that explains why the chip
has finally given up and stopped the printer.
You can buy the chips, Static Control Corporation have them, try to find a
distributor of theiirs in the UK and see if they will sell you just a chip, the
supplier of the toner may also have them.

Tony,

Thanks for the tip. It turns out that SCC's UK office is just down the
road:)
