Black banding on Laserjet 1300

I just got in a laserjet 1300 which seems a whole lot newer than my
laserjet 6L? But pressing test print (and of course printing anything
from the printer) just results in masses of black banding running
horizontally across the page and all text being almost completely
obscured by the banding. It looks as if a drum is depositing a huge
band of ink on the page and something is smudging it as the drum goes
round until it gets back to the part where the drum deposits the ink
all over again. (Sorry for amateurish description). I can just make
out under all the ink that the cartridge seems to have 75% of its
capacity left, (which probably isnt the case with my 6L!).

I am just going over to Macs so I kinda need a USB laserjet and wonder
if this one can be made serviceable easily?

Is this printer terminal or is there likely to be anything I can do to
get it working properly again? I cant find anything on google about
this problem?

Almost certainly a cartridge problem based on your description.
Assuming there is more than one horizontal band can you measure the vertical
distance between the start of one band and the start of the next band?
Tony

The distance between the major bands is about an inch and a half with
a few minor bands about a third of the way between each major band. I
assumed there was something going round and thought that there was
some roller in there somewhere doing this but didnt know whether it
was a drum or not. Is there any possibilty of doing anything to some
roller to fix this problem or is this something HP should fix under
warranty if the cart has so much toner left in it? (and are they the
sort of company to want to fix this at the moment or evade any
warranty?)

As a footnote the PCR (Primary Charge Roller) will probably have developed a
small, hard to see, hymp at one spot. This lifts the roller away from thedrum
and screws up the charging process causing the horizontal banding.
Tony
Is there any way of turning the roller to see whether this is the case
or of cleaning it off if I do find a bump adhering to the roller?
Rubbing alcohol? Or is it in the roller itself? I will of course
check all usual sources to see if any carts are going cheap but I was
still wondering what I can do with this brand-new looking one: There
ARE four scratch marks on the chip: Is that just where the contact is
made (does the contact make these tiny vertical scratches?) or might
this cause any part of the problem?
