Laserjet 4000 paper jam

I have an HP Laserjet 4000 which basically works well. However, it has
recently started to report "13.1 Paper Jam. Open input trays then open
and close top cover".

There is no sign of any paper jammed anywhere in the works.

Printing from paper in the top tray works OK. The problem occurs only
printing from paper in the bottom drawer. When the problem is reported,
the top sheet in the drawer has been pulled forward about 0.5 inch (1
cm) so that it just touches the pinch roller.

I have removed the drawer to look inside the printer, but cannot see any
obvious cause of the problem.

I am using the same paper stock that I have used for years.

Ideas anyone?

There is a rubber roller part that picks up the paper, called a paper
pickup roller, odly enough.

Just like tires oon automobiles, these rubber rollers wear out or become
hardened by oxygen/ozone. Then they don't properly move the paper and
you get a paper jam.

In addition, there is typically a small pad of cork like material that
is called a paper separation pad. It works with the pickup roller to
pick up only one sheet at a time. It too wears out.

You get many thousands of pages of output for each pair or
pickup-roller and pad combination.

You can probably buy a set along with an instructional video from
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com.

You can buy the parts from www.printerworks.com and install them yourself.

This can be caused by a worn roller slipping on the paper. There are
two rollers for each tray. One is in the tray and easily visible. The
other is in the printer, above the tray opening. Both of these rollers
should have a visible tread. When the tread wears off, the rollers can
slip.

The rollers are inexpensive and easy to replace without tools.

excellent source of info for anybody who wants to fit the easy to replace parts
on most LaserJets.
Full instructions are there (subset of a full maintenance kit installation, you
only need the lower tray instruction for your problem).

Full instructions are there (subset of a full maintenance kit installation, you
only need the lower tray instruction for your problem).

Sorry I should have said that I strongly recommend that you replace both the
rollers (one in the tray and one immediately above it in the printer body,
otherwise you may get paper separation problems in the future).
