large pst causing network slowdown?

R

raseron

running xp sp2, outlook 2k3 on a windows server 2k3 lan.

i have a user with an exceptionally large pst file (6.5GB) that is on a
network share. she was cleaning messages out of the pst, thousands of
messages, and it appeared to slow down my entire network. is that possible?

she was probably deleting tens of thousands of messages. would outlook then
attempt to reindex that pst and in so doing, suck up a lot of network
resources?

thank you for your input.

Dear ross,

at first:

Personal folder files are unsupported over a LAN or over a WAN link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297019/en-us

So, do not store your Personal Folder PST files on a network drive.
and it appeared to slow down my entire network. is that possible?

It is, because she deletes thousands of database entries, but after the
delation is finished, the network traffik must be the same as before she
starts the delation.
attempt to reindex that pst and in so doing, suck up a lot of network
resources?

Normally you "compress" a datafile, after you delete a lot of items. Does
she also compress the PST file?

Additional information about PST files:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829971/en-us

This could also take a lot of traffik, but after this is finished, the
network traffik must be the same as before.

Youu can have a look on her computer: Task Manager / Process and here you
can sort by "CPU", then you can see if Outlook takes a lot of CPU time on
this computer.

I prefer to move the PST file to the local harddrive.

thanks for the reply, oliver.

i suspected as much. yes, i've moved it locally. in fact, once i had done
so, my network traffic returned to its normal rate.

this pst is the last to be added to our recently-purchased archiving
solution. once i've imported it, i'll have no more pst's to worry about.

thanks again for your input. much appreciated.

Hi Ross,
this pst is the last to be added to our recently-purchased archiving

You can make a copy of the PST file to the "network" drive with a script or
maybe with this Freeware tool of Microsoft:

"Outlook 2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3a-b7d0-4b16-b8af-5a6322f4fd01&displaylang=en

I do not know, but maybe you can select the path where you want to save the
copy of the PST file and if you can, you can select the network drive for
the copy.
