PST file too large

The pst file of Outlook 2002 has become too large. The program becomes
rather slow in starting.

How to deal with this issue, other than deleting messages ? My impression is
that making archives does not make this file smaller. How can one start with
a new pst file if one can not make it smaller ?

After deleting items (manually or via archiving) you must compress the
pst-file whith it becomes smaller:

Control Panel | Mail | Data Files

There highlight your pst-file and click the settings button.
