Seem to have developed a very large (estimated about 10 gig) in the middle of
my C drive..defrag does nothing to it.

Is there a chkdsk process and if so how do I use it

if not, any ideas on how I can analyse / dispose of this?

Open a command prompt, type chkdsk /? and hit Enter.

Why do you think this is a problem?

Perhaps you should read up on defragging. That's the advice I got from others in this group, and that's what i did. Now that I understand it better, I no longer worry about such things.

What is the name of this file? The only contiguous file that most defrag will
not touch is the Windows swap file. I believe this is also known as Virtual
Memory (???)

Why do you need to estimate? Windows Explorer will tell you the exact
size.
...in the middle of my C drive...

How do you know it is in the middle? From the above statement I infer
that you are looking at the color chart constructed by DEFRAG, and you
see a single blue chunk in the middle. This does not necessarily
represent a single file.
...defrag does nothing to it.

DEFRAG does not necessarily shift all files to the beginning of the
drive.

Before you can dispose of it, you need to know what it is. A 10GB file
should be identifiable.
