cannot repair after chkdsk

Chkdsk query shows c is dirty. Chkdsk runs and at stage 2 gets to 100% and
then reports that there is not sufficient space to recover lost files. I
have a 160 gig hard drive with 46 gigs free! How can i sort this out. I know
of no lost files and my system is running ok. As a result of this error i
also cannot run defrag as it reports that chkdsk is scheduled to run on c.
Can anyone help please. I have read all kinds of articles and cannot find
help. The chkdsk error needs to be sorted out befor i can run defrag.
THANKS

I assume you are using NTFS with such a large disk. Use the command prompt
(run command and type cmd, press OK) Then when in the command prompt type
chkntfs /x c: and press return (you can look at the help by typing chkntfs
/?) . This will turn off the default chkdsk on a "dirty" drive and may allow
you to run defrag. Perhaps if you have very big files on you drive then
46Gig is not enough free space for the chkdsk to complete the action.
