large attchments being sent multiple times

i send emails with large attchments and while the email appears to just sit
in the outbox it's actually being received by the recipients multiple times.
(sometimes 30 or 40 times!!) i have no indication this is happening as the
email does not move over to my sent items. I try to delete it but it will
not allow unless i go off line. i am using Outlook 2007 and vista. any
ideas???
