People have told me I should NOT turn off the laptop if it is going to be
off for several hours...instead put it in sleep mode. Is this right?
Also, I have my laptop plugged in the power so I don't use my battery very
often. Should I just take the battery out, or does it make a difference?
Thanks.

Doesn't make a difference to me, I usually go to bed late in the night and I
wake up early, so I just put it sleep even when its plugged into the AC
since the process of Shutdown/Startup is a bit time consuming for me.

What type of battery? Ni-Cd batteries work best if they are charged up and
then drained before recharging - if you charge them when only partially
discharged they tend to take on that as a new depleted level - called
'memory'. Ni-MH work best if charged before they are completely drained
and exhibit no memory. Li-ion batteries are not supposed to be so
sensitive to the issue.

In my humble opinion ...

If your laptop is to stay where it is and you are going away, sleep mode is
perfectly appropriate for any amount of time. If the laptop is going to
move, hibernation mode is the minimum acceptable state for the computer to
be in.

The battery should stay where it is, since newer chargers and laptops won't
overcharge the battery. Most offer a stand-by or trickle mode when the
battery is fully charged. IBM laptops will actually "exercise" the battery,
occasionally letting the charge run down a bit and then topping it back up
again.

I don't think it should cause any damage. I often have my laptop plugged into AC without a battery,
and it's not caused any problems (well, not so far anyway, after around 9 months of use).

Depends on the power supply, and the type. Best bet is to
check with the manufacturer. There are different types of
power supplies. But with the circuit open, it shouldn't make
too much of a difference. Just don't quote me on that without
asking them.

A notebook power supply normally feeds voltage into the
battery and runs the notebook. When it senses that the AC
is off, it automatically switches to battery. You should maybe
have a surge suppressor in line to power it off of.

But again, I may be wrong. So, again, best bet is the
manufacturer.
