Laptop(XP) can connect to another Laptop(XP) but not to hub or des

I got 3 system.
Destop-1
Laptop-1
Laptop-2

All running Windows XP Professional.
Desktop-1 and Laptop-1 are Pentium4
Laptop-2 is Pentium2.

Scenario 1:
When Laptop-2 is connected directly to Laptop-1, it connects at 10MBps and
works fine.

Scenario 2:
When Laptop-2 is connected direct to the Desktop, it does not connect

Scenario 3:
When Laptop-2 is connected to hub, with only Laptop-1 the only other one
connected to hub, it still fails to connect.

Tried the Repair option of XP many times. No use.
Goes without saying that Laptop-1 connects fine with Desktop-1 directly or
through the hub at 100MBps. Other Laptops also connect through hub at 100MBps
without problem.

Can somebody help?

If this works:
Scenario 1:
When Laptop-2 is connected directly to Laptop-1, it connects at 10MBps and
works fine.

and this does not work:
Scenario 3:
When Laptop-2 is connected to hub, with only Laptop-1 the only other one
connected to hub, it still fails to connect.

I can only think (assuming you have not changed the software settings) that
you are using the wrong type of cable ... Scenario 1 would use a 'crossover'
cable, whereas scenario 3 would require 2 'strait-through' cabels. If you
dont know what I am talking about chances are this is the problem.
