switch .vs. hub

I currently have a hub in the basement connecting all the cat 5 jacks
throughout the house. I noticed the connection speed on my laptop through
the hub is 10mbps but if i take it upstairs and connect directly to one my my
router's ports it gets 100mbps. I understand hubs are "dumb" devices and
sends the data to all ports but if i get a switch will I get 100mbps on the
laptop downstairs? Does this speed only affect file transferrs between
computers or does it also affect internet speed?

Yes, your laptop will connect at 100mbps if you replace the 10mbps hub
with a 100mbps switch. File transfers will go at the higher speed.
However, that won't have any effect on Internet speed, since the
maximum speed of a home broadband connection (cable modem, DSL modem,
satellite, etc) is far less than 10mbps.

Thanks Steve, is there any other setup that a switch would take other than
uncabeling the hub and reconnect it to the switch?

You're welcome, Nih. There's no setup needed for a switch. You might
need to disable and then enable the network connections on the
attached computers after connecting the switch.
