Laptop with possible Control Panel corruption

My laptop is running Win/2K SP4 & Rollup1 to SP4

This morning I wanted to delete an installed program. I started
control panel & clicked on add/remove programs. My mouse pointer
displayed the wait symbol for about 1 second then nothing. There was
no visible response to clicking on the add/remove programs icon
additional times.

Clicking on add/remove programs additional times did generate
additional instances of mshta.exe as a process in task manager.

Besides this problem with add/remove programs, every other feature of
Win/2K and all installed programs seem to work fine.

I'm sure that reformating & reinstalling windows will resolve the
problem, but I'm hopeful that there's an easier fix.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

"SYMPTOMS
When you start the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel on a computer
running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, the following error message may
be displayed:
Mshta.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows
RESOLUTION
To resolve the behavior, type the following commands in the Run dialog box:

..sfc /purgecache
..sfc /scannow

NOTE: Windows 2000 prompts you to insert the Windows 2000 Professional
CD-ROM to complete these commands.

If you run these commands and the behavior is not resolved, perform an
in-place upgrade of Windows 2000 Professional. "
