laptop trouble please help?

All that I am familiar with is that you may need to adjust your power
settings. Go to start-->control panel-->power (that's what it is called in
XP at least). See if your computer is set to turn the screen down after xx
minutes even when plugged in.
 
I just bought a used gateway laptop computer running windows me os, and when
i first turn it on and windows loads, it does just fine, but after ihave
been on there for awhile, the screen starts fading out, what can be causing
this? i dont have a battery in it, i am just using thp power cord so it
shouldnt be giving out of juice or any such thing right?
Please help if you can, i have left a message on the mans aswering machine
that i bought it from, but he has not got back in touch with me yet, and
since i bought it as is, he may not!
