my acer aspire laptop was infected by a rootkit late in March2005 and
slowed down the performance considerably, which i noticed but didnt
give attention to. I first noticed the presence of a rootkit when
Spycatcher(Tenebril) detected it. After that for the first three days
the system would shutdown as soon i log in. Then the intervals between
each shutdown increased but for sometime and remained constant
thereafter.
I noticed some interesting things like:
1. totally disabling Spycatcher thereafter (every fresh installation)
2. system would shutdown everytime i tried to upgrade XP or any
existing software such as yahoo messenger.
3. if i tried to install clean XP, it will allow the installation to
progress only for sometime then shutdown itself..
now after some messup i managed to erase the XP, that too
incompletely..
im trying to use some Booting tools such as Active Killdisk,
HDDregenerator etc.. but everything is stopped abruptly..
i want to know whether RAM is affected or HDD is affected.. i also want
to know if there is anything that can be done to clean RAM/HDD totally
w/o being stopped in the middle..
thanks for any help..
