Laptop Theft - XP Pro

Tony Harper

Any suggestions on the following.

I had a laptop that I'd bought and installed XP Pro on.
Attached the sticker and registered. The works. All
legal and above board.

The Laptop has now been stolen. What can I do?

I'd like to install XP pro onto the replacement computer
I've got but am worried about falling foul of the
registration process.

Tony;
Sticker attached to laptop suggests Windows XP is OEM.
In that case thieves also stole Windows XP since OEM is normally
permanently tied to the first computer installed regardless the
condition of the original computer.

When reporting to insurance company, include Windows as part of the
computer...which it is.

I put the sticker on the laptop after I installed the
software.
I've reported the missing software to the insurance
company. They have given me a cash settlement. I've
bought a new laptop with this, this has XP home on it.
Do I now have to bin the XP pro CD? or can I let
microsoft know that I'm the user of that license and not
the robbing scum whole stole the laptop?

Thanks for your thoughts

Tony

Does not your insurance company cover the cost of replacement of the
operating system, as well as the computer?

You can legally put your copy of Pro on your new laptop since it was a
retail purchased version. However, since laptops are very
proprietary, make sure you're able to obtain all necessary drivers for
the hardware and especially the battery/power management.

When it comes time to activate your copy of Pro, you may have to phone
in to MS in order to accomplish activation. When you do, you can
explain the circumstances if they question you. I rather doubt they
would.

BTW, make sure you lock down your new laptop this time......

"I put the sticker on the laptop" suggests OEM since retail does not
come with such a sticker.
If retail, you are correct, however if OEM, Windows was stolen with
the laptop.

You were paid for Windows XP Pro and computer in the cash settlement,
you no longer own the license.
Since Windows XP is OEM, it was stolen with the computer.
You can bin the CD, use for a coaster Frisbee etc, but you no longer
have a license to install it on a computer.

If it was a retail purchase of XP you are entitled to transfer it; at
activation you may have to do it by phoning in by voice. The potential
difficulty is in that the evidence of ownership is formally with the
Cert of Authenticity; if that got stolen you might have difficulty
establishing ownership. But it is not very likely to arise.
And of course if you stuck the sticker with Product key on the laptop
and don't have a separate note, you have no way to carry out the new
installation

He might mean the one with the Product key; or he might have detached
and stuck the CoA label
