Any issues with doing a clean install? Boot the laptop with the
Windows XP installation cdrom. Have setup partition and format
the hard drive. For running the laptop's utilities, be sure to
download and store them on a CD-R for later use.

Here is a link with info on how to do a clean install. First visit the Dell
website and download all the XP compatible drivers for that model of
laptop. Save them to CD.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

One method is to use a Knoppix disk (free: http://www.knoppix.net/), boot to
that, open a Konsole, and type sudo qtparted to repartition the drive.
Suggested method: Delete all partitions. Reboot to your Windows CD and
install as if it were a new system.

I appreciate the respones, but I wasn't clear maybe. The xp on the laptop is
newer than what I have. But mine is LEGAL. So I will not get stuck in some
silly loop is what all of you are saying? Once before i remember getting
stuck because the version on the HD was newer than what I was installing?
You guys say no, OK, I'll give it a shot.
Thanks

It doesn't matter what version is on the computer if you are doing a clean
install. When installing delete the partitions then create a new one for
XP, format and install to that. Again, here is a link for how to do a clean
install.
