Laptop sound

I have a laptop, Acer Travelmete 2201LC. From Day One the sound hasn't
worked properly. If I play a DVD, the opening music of the film is excllent,
but as soon as speech begins, it is almost inaudible. I have configured the
speakers, but without success Can anyone advise, please?
