Laptop Shuts Down

I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop, lately i've found that overnight, the
machine is turning itself off. This only happens if I leave it sitting in the
upright positions while it's switched on. Call me crazy but if I turn the
machine on it's side, it doesn't switch off at all. This is not a regularly
time occurrence, it sometimes happens, sometimes doesn't, but it's started
happening more frequently. Is there any way that I can stop the laptop from
turning itself off. I run a business and we download software updates from
the mainframe onto the laptop overnight because of the amount of virtual
memory that it takes up running the download program, but the last few days,
I've had to start the sometimes 14 hour downloads from scratch because of the
shut down the night before.
There is never a recovery screen to say it wasn't shut down correctly, nor
does it run a scan disk, it starts up normally as it would if I shut it down
myself. Can anyone help me PLEASE??

Regards,

Marc

Check the power management options. An inadvertent change from "Always ON" to
any other power management mode could result in the computer going into
standby. I assume you are not running on batteries, and that there is not a
UPC, surge protector, etc. that is shutting down and cutting power to the
laptop.

If it runs fine when on its side and doesn't when flat on the desk,
I'd suspect over-heating problems. Maybe the internal fans are getting
"tired"?

In all likelihood, the laptop is shutting down because it's
over-heating. Setting the machine on it's side allows better air flow.
Have you cleaned out the fans and airways, lately? Do you keep the
laptop on a non-insulative surface, so the heat it generates can be
conducted away? Most laptops really aren't designed for 24/7
operations, you know. If you need such, a desktop PC would better suit
those needs, or you can shop around for a more robust laptop.
