Laptop Screen Problems

I have a Dell Insprion 8600 and Windows informed me of a critical update,
KB912919, yesterday. I went to Windows Update and got it, Windows then
prompted me to restart to apply the update and so I did. I left while it
rebooted and came back and the screen was dark. I thought the laptop might
be hibernating but the light was solidly on which means it's fully
functioning.

I restarted it, the harddrive light flashed appropriately but I got no
picture. I noticed later that the moment when the screen resolution
changes, when the BIOS comes up, Windows is on the loading screen, then when
the list of users is displayed, I can faintly see the picture but it quickly
disappears. Under a lot of light, I could barely see the picture while
Windows was on the desktop.

I turned the computer off for the night and woke up, turned it back on. The
display was dim but not off, but now there are only random lines across the
screen, some are black, some are red, etc...

My sister also has a Dell and she said Windows resized to a very small
resolution but she was able to go back. I talked to some other Dell
Inspiron owners and some of them have had the same thing happen to them.

What kind of update has Microsoft indicated as being "critical" yet cripples
our computers?

Notorious

The exact same BS happened to my Inspiron 8600 !

Please post a solution if one exists (other than the McAfee one
mentioned above). I tried backing out the patch, and my screen still
goes black about 15 seconds after rebooting.

Pretty annoying looking at BIOS settings and having the screen go dark.

Thanks,
-Brett
