laptop power going crazy

my laptop has never had any problems until a few hours ago when i suddently
lost most of my battery, I went down from 100% to 7%. All I was doing was
opening a word document. It started to charge fine, and got to about 100%
again, when the light on my laptop switched from orange to green telling me
it was charged. however, it switched right back to orange and when i looked
at the power information, my power had gone back to 0%. Right now, its still
on the orange charging light and occasionally turning off and turning orange
again. The thing that makes me wonder what problem I am having is that my
computer is responding as if it was fully charged yet the battery meters both
say 0%. I will be taking it to the store tomorrow, but I just wanted to know
if anyone knew what i should do before hand.

Thanks and sorry for the long post!!

VERY strongly suggest you make sure you have
a backup copy of your important work (amazing the
number of people who have years of work on one
disk with no backups -- the screeching is horrible
when it crashes !!)

What type of crash would it be. battery related, hard drive related or
motherboard related?

I think he means the screeching of the person who found they lost their
oh so important data and didn't have a backup.

The battery is shot. I just had a Dell Latitude battery go like that. One minute good, next
dead. Sometimes, the power cells are good, but the circuitry in the battery case goes bad.
Ebay has the replacement batteries for considerably less then any store or the manufacturer.
The laptop will run on AC only, but is the power fails or it gets unplugged, it just shuts off.

laptop batteries, like all consumer products, do need
replacing sometimes. I'd calculate how long you've had the
battery, and if it's over 2 - 3 years, it's likely time to
replace it.

If it's relatively new, check the warranty and r n r it with
the warranty.

Good luck!

The EASIEST thing to check/replace, and the CHEAPEST (for
another broke student / 'been there, done that') is to get
the battery checked out/ replaced.

If it's not the battery, take it to the local service
station. You'll likely have it back overnight.

Good luck!
