Laptop mouse pad

The mouse pad on my compaq laptop, running windows XP,
has a very sensive pad. It makes me grab things I don't
want to and clik on things that I don't want to. How can
I change it's behavior to stop this: so tapping on it
will not make the cursor go there or select an item.
 
Open control panel|mouse properties. You likely have an advanced features
tab with a settings button. That opens up a panel that allows advanced
configuration of your touchpad, including sensitivity.
