Laptop (HP Omnibook) Lock up with XP

If I boot my HP Omnibook 900B without power connected
(running off battery) my mouse will not work. With power
(mains) connected no problem.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the battery is nearing the end of its natural life and that it
now cannot output sufficient power to supply the USB or PS/2 ports with
enough power for them to work.

Solution: purchase a new battery.
