Laptop goes to external monitor

Ever since I put on a new LCD on my laptop it wants to boot to an external
monitor even if one is not connected.

The LCD screen works until right after the little progress bar that goes
back and forth. Then the LCD is blank but still lit (bright). Computer is
still running. When the harddrive stops I press the sleep button. Then after
it is in sleep mode I press it again and the LCD works just fine and I see
the logon screen.

Any ideas on why it would start to the external monitor mode and where/how
to change that?

This is an HP Omnibook 6100. I have two harddrives I can use one running XP
and the other 2000. Both have the problem.

Thanks

Laptops have a function key, use it with the key to switch display types to
revert back to the onboard LCD, read the manual or contact HP support if you
can't determine the proper keys to use, it varies buy laptop and MFG, one of
the F keys usually has a monitor picture on it.

Thanks for the response but maybe I wasn't clear.
Even if an external monitor is NOT present Windows tries to go to it.
This is during boot up which would have nothing to do with the F key.

I guess I am hoping someone knows what Windows actually does when it tries
to find a monitor.
Maybe a registry entry or maybe I have a system setting that is overriding
Windows? A corrupt Windows video file? I checked for any obvious settings
but not all things are obvious.

Thanks

Update
It appears to only happen when the resolution is set to 1400 x 1050 (max).
I realize this is probably more of a hardware issue but I have been posting
everywhere hoping someone has come across this before.
What is strange is that it works if I just put it in and out of sleep mode.
