Laptop&external keyboard

I connected an external usb keyboard into my laptop and
it works fine. Problem when I unplug it many of the
laptop keyboard letters type numbers, back slashes and
asterick unless I hold down the function key. In order to
get it right I have to restore it to a different time
when I did not have the keyboard plugged in. Any help
would be greatly appreceiated. Running XP Pro

A simple reboot doesn't solve that niggle?
