Using an external monitor with a laptop

I have purchased a port replicator and an external monitor to use with my
laptop. I can set Windows XP so that the external monitor is my sole
monitor. However, when I try to close the laptop so that I can use an
external keyboard, the laptop goes into hibernation. How can I physically
shut the laptop, but keep everything running?

This is different from one laptop to the next. You need to check the manual
that came with your laptop.
