Laptop doesn't read SD card

My laptop has a card reader but doesn't read SD cards that are 2Gb,
instead asking to "format" them. The same cards are read without
problem on my PC (built-in card reader) and PDA. My laptop does read
cards that are smaller than 2Gb. This has now happened with 2
different cards, so I know it's not the fault of the SD card.

I've tried upgrading the card drivers but it made no difference. My
laptop behaved like this from new - it isn't a recent phenomenon.

It looks like the SD card reader in the laptop has a physical hardware
card size limitation. I have a MP3 player that also "doubles" as a SD
card drive and it has a physical size limit of 512MB.
