I have an Acer Aspire 5050 running Windows XP and yesterday it all of a
sudden started having problems booting up. Sometimes we can get it to start
in Safe Mode, other times it hangs on bootup. Nothing new installed or added
other than new memory a couple of weeks ago. Error message reads:

IO System verification error in wmiacpi.sys (WDM Driver Error 20e)
[wmiacpi.sys+152f at BA44D52F]....Beginning dump of physical memory

Is my laptop toast?

It sounds like it could be a memory problem. If you have not installed the
correct type of memory (and laptops are more susceptible to RAM
discrepancies than desktops), I would take out your 'new' memory and try
running it with the original memory and see what happens. If it runs OK I
would say you have mismatched memory.

I found this article which explains where the error is coming from

wmiacpi.sys = W indows M anagement I nterface for ACPI
and talks about it's purpose.

The URL is very long so I have used Tiny Url to shorten it.

This link seems to be the problem you are experiencing.

OK for now I don't have encounter more BSOD's, and that's only after I
disabled (not in the BIOS) but by not choose the option for minimal
power management and so not enabling the Cool and quiet function of
AMD...
Source: Link above.

Is your computer still under warranty? Acer may know about this power
management issue, which links back to AMD. You may be able to regain
access by changing the BIOS setting -see link above.

Hope this helps.
