laptop and email

I have just got a laptop a few days ago for my birthday and I have tried to
use email. I try to send somebody an email and it says that the connection is
wrong or somehing and it says something about SMTP and I am really confused
please help!!!!!!

<sigh> presumably you have set up an email account according to the
instructions from your ISP?
Can you access the internet from your laptop?
 
You need to enter the settings required to access your current email
account.
Your email provider should have a help page on their website with the proper
settings.
Keep in mind that Windows Mail can only access POP and IMAP email accounts
(not webmail (http) including Hotmail).
 
Sounds like you failed to set up an email account.
Do you have an existing email address? If so, what is the part
after the @ symbol?
