Lanman Server

B

Brian Gray

I have a problem with the Server service not starting in XP Pro.

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Event viewer messages are : The service was unable to load the server
driver.
The system cannot find the
file specified.

Problem was present under SP1. I installed SP2 and problem still exists.

svchost.exe and svrsvc.dll both exist in C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder.

The Workstation service is starting but Computer Browser service is not
starting because it is dependent on the Server service.

Registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM>Current Control Set> Services> Lanmanserver>
Image Path REG_EXPAND_SZ
%Systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM>Current Control Set> Services> Lanmanserver>
Parameters> ServiceDLL REG_EXPAND_SZ
%Systemroot%\system32\srvsvc.dll

I can access the 'net thru an ADSL router but obviously can't see this or
any other machine on the LAN.

Any suggestions as to where I look or what to try next?

Thanks

BG

You'll want to bind 'File and Printer Sharing' on the connection. Control
Panel|Network|"connection"|Properties|General and check the box for "File
and Printer Sharing for........."

Yes, "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is checked. I've
Uninstalled, rebooted then reinstalled this service. No improvement.

Thanks

Check Event Viewer for errors.

I should have mentioned the file should be in %systemroot%\system32\drivers
