Language to English in French XP Pro?

E

Elwood Dowd

I just purchased a laptop on eBay (I know, I know) from a Canadian
seller. The laptop is in fantastic condition, BUT it is loaded with the
French version of Windows XP. Needless to say this was not mentioned in
the ad.

I would like to keep the laptop, since it has some cool fancy buttons
for French diacritical letters. However, not being able to read French,
I have no idea how to set the language to English so I can do anything
with the machine at all.

Is there a setting somewhere to change the language to English, or
barring that, can I reinstall an English version without a CD? I
understand that this laptop (thinkpad R40) comes with an XP image
pre-loaded on the disk.

thanks for any help

You're only option is to buy the english version, format the drive, and
install the english version. There is no way to change the language from
within xp or when installing the french version from the image.

Windows XP is written in specific language versions, therefore one
cannot change it from one language version to another. You'll need
to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP in the language version
you desire, reformat your drive and install it "clean".

Or if you have an available empty drive or partition, you can install
another "Full Version" of Windows XP in a different language version
and create a dual-boot configuration.

A good third-party partitioning program is Partition Magic 8.

Greetings --

You cannot upgrade or convert from one language version of the OS
to another, so you'll have to purchase and use the full version of
English WinXP to perform a clean installation.
