Are there fundamental differences between XP Japanese and XP Chinese editions
and XP with Japanese or Chinese language options installed?

By this I mean could I potentially see different behaviour between one and
the other for a given action?

Some programs may display the wrong characters in dialog boxes, window
titles, etc. on an english Windows XP system that has the
Japanese/Chinese/Korean character sets installed.
That is what i'm seeing at least, a '\' will display as a strike-through
'W' for example instead of the expected character on my system setup with
english XP Pro, and the above character sets installed.
I can't speak for localised versions of XP unfortunately.
