I added Greek keyboard and in the
Text Services and Input Languages
dialog, Settings tab, Preferences: Language Bar... button I have checked
Show the Language bar on the desktop
(I also checked
Show text labels on the Language bar
but that subsequently gets grayed out. I wish I could see text
indicating the language as in Win98, but I guess this is not how things
are in Win XP.)
The result was that I would have a keyboard icon next to the taskbar
tray, and by pressing Shift+Ctrl I can alternate between English and
Greek. So far so good. Now:
From Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advanced tab >
Language for non-Unicode programs, I selected Greek and rebooted. The
result or rather a side effect is that now next to the keyboard icon by
the taskbar tray there is an EN indicating English (United States).
What is that for? When I alternate as before between English and Greek
the keyboard language changes as before, the EN indicator, however,
remains unchanged. If I right click the EN label and choose Greek, EN is
replaced with EL (signifying Greek), the keyboard changes and the
keyboard icon disappears. To switch back to EN I have to rightclick on
the label and choose EN - the shortcut does not work.
After unchecking (or rechecking?)
Show text labels on the Language bar
and the keyboard icon disappeared and now I cannot use the Shift+Ctrl
keyboard shortcut to switch between languages; I tried to make it appear
again but I can't.
So now I have the text language label only, but can't use the keyboard
shortcut, I have to click on it and select the language I want.
Ideally I would like to have only the text language label next to the
taskbar tray and be able to switch between languages with the keyboard
shortcut.
Second best solution would be to have the keyboard icon only and be able
to switch keyboards without the language text label.
Third best solution would be how it was momentarily before, that is in
addition to the keyboard icon having the text language label showing
always EN (somewhat irritating) but still being able to switch keyboards
with the shortcut.
How can I bring about one of the first 3 solutions?
Or am I missing something?
Thanks,
Eustace
