LAN Passwords - XP

Guest

I have Windows XP Home edition and have installed a LAN containing (2) additional PC's both running W98. The network works fine in that from the XP, I can see and access all of the shared devices on the other PC's. From the other PC's I can see the XP, but cannot access it, because I am prompted for a password. I can find no place to set the password for the other PC's, or to eliminate the need for a password, since all three of these machines are in my home, and used mostly by me

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

You may have "guest" enabled (unwise) on the other computers...the most
common fix for the problem you're having is to either have all logins use
the same name and password, or, if not, create each login and password
identically on all computers.

Greetings --

On the WinXP PC, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will
be able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall
is disabled on the internal LAN connection.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

I think the other posts cover much more in terms of expert advice than
I can offer, but I did find a similar problem getting Win98 machines
to talk to Win2k machines in the past. The solution was to set the
Win98 machines to use the same log on (and from memory I also changed
the primary log on to "Client For Microsoft Networks" from "Windows
Family logon" which it had been previously) and then Win2k began to
accept the connections.
