Hi
I am re-posting this topic because I still have the problem and the last
thread started by Roy Hermer on 9/26 sort of petered out...
Anyway my problem is exactly the same as Roy's:
...intermittently, I see the little dialog box from the
system tray come up saying "Local Area Connection - A
network cable is unplugged" followed almost immediately
with the next dialog box saying "Local Area Connection is
now connected".

This coninues to happen to me. I too have a D-Link router -and the message
is coming on the computer that is hardwired to the D-Link. I've tried
different cables, switching to different jacks and 2 different ethernet
adapters on my computer, an Intel on my motherboard and a D-Link. No
help.
I've also updated all drivers and firmware for the router and adapters.

I was just wondering if anyone has an idea or solution.

Thanks
Bill

The only thing you haven't tried is a different router. I don't know
what the Roy Hermer thread was all about, but let's just deal with
*your* problem. Did the networking ever work? If so, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

How old is the router? They don't last forever and sometimes you can get
a lemon.

Bill,
You mentioned that you upgraded the firmware of the D-Link. I have the DI-624 one, and after I do a firmware upgrade. I need to go into the router's settings interface, and make sure that things haven't been changed back to the default ones.

I would check the under DCHP settings, see how often it checks IP renewal.

I don't know if this is appropriate because I'm new to newsgroups, however I
am experiencing exactly the same problem to "anonymous".

I am useing a Netgear FR114P which I had replaced under warranty as I was
sure that it was the faulty item but I experienced the same problem with the
replacement.

My ethernet is included with a Gigabyte GA-8KNXP MB and is a IntelPro 1000 CT

I find that as soon as the problem starts (approx 3-4 minutes after booting
and internet connection is fine at that stage), if I go into network
connections right click on the Intel LAC click repair once or twice it
sometimes fixes the problem or disable and enable sometimes helps. I only
have approx 30 seconds to do this as after that time the router port lights
go out and then is a shutdown, power disconnection to the faulty computer,
power reconnection and reboot.

Everything remains stable after the above is sorted for as long as the
computer is operating 1hour or 1 week

I have for a while used an SMC USB Ethernet Adapter Model SMC2206USB/ETH and
this works flawlessly through the router however it does not suit me to keep
useing it.

Other computers on the system (running XP) have not experienced this problem
and are not affected during this problem.

This is a bit vague but I think the problem has been there since new - appx
12 months

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks RRR news,
By 'IP renewal' do you mean Lease Time?
My DI-624 verC is set to 1 week.
I should also mention that I've had this router since July 04 - but - I've
had this problem even back when I had a Linksys.

Zathros,
Yes I have that set for once a week also. Since you mentioned that you have had this problem before you got your D-Link. Did you have this problem before adding a router to your setup? Have you tried just running one PC connected to your modem, and had these disconnects?

1. First I would try switching the ethenent cables, move the one attached from the cable modem to router, to router going into PC. Then and move the other cable to connect between modem and router. Or if you have, a spare working, straight through cable. Just to make sure that your cables are not damaged.

2. If the above does not work, and you had disconnects when the router was not hooked up. You might have a problem with your cable service, or cable hardware, such as modem or wire splitter..
a. If you lease your cable modem, you might want to have the cable co. come out and check the modem, and the cable service. I live in an apt. bldg, and using Comcast, and the cable company had to boost the signal to the apt. In addition, they had to replace the cable modem, I lease from them.

b. If you purchase the modem, you may need to go to the manufacturer's website, and look if there is a firmware upgrade, especially if you are using WinXP SP2. If trouble still persists, I would call the cable co., and make sure your cable line is performing, as it should.

If the disconnects are occuring with PC's/Notebooks connected wirelessly, you may need to change the channel that the signal is sent, the default is channel 6. Portable/Cell phones may interfere, or other people using routers, also using channel 6.

1. You should change the router's SSID name, don't use "Default", use something unique.

2. You will need to change the SSID & Channel setting on the wireless card, to.
