I have two computers (both WinXPhome) on a home network going through a
D-Link Router and SBC - DSL connection. Last night I was on the primary
computer and it connected to the internet just fine. Today when I turned it
on, I got a message saying "Local Area Connection - A network cable is
unplugged". I check the cable connections and they were fine. I replaced
the cable with one I know is good and still the same problem. Network
Connections window tell me that a Network cable is unplugged from "Local Area
Connection". When I select Properties on my Local Area Connects, it lists a
SiS 900 Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (which is part of the motherboard and
not an add on card) and says This device is working properly.
I tried my second computer and it can connect to the internet fine. I tried
reversing the cables on the router (put computer #1 cable into the router
plug for computer #2 and computer #2 cable into the router plug for #1.
Computer #1 still says there is a network cable unplugged and computer #2 can
connect to the internet.
This tells me there is no problem with the router.
So here are my questions:
1. If the router is OK and the cables are ok, it would seem that the
problem must be in my ethernet adapter, but my computer tells me that this
device is working properly.
2. Is there any other way I can check to see if the ethernet adapter is bad.
3. Do you have any other suggestions to fix this problem.
Thanks for your help.
